Community History Program
Exploring, Documenting, and Sharing Cape May's Diverse History
The Center’s Community History Program (CHP) documents, preserves, and shares the rich history of Cape Island’s long-established African American community. Through this initiative, CHP has established the John and Janet Nash African American History Archive and produced more than twenty exhibitions highlighting diverse aspects of the African American experience in Cape May. These efforts ensure that the stories, contributions, and cultural legacy of the community remain accessible to current and future generations.

CCA’s Community History Program is dedicated to discovering, preserving and presenting the African American history of Cape May County. The Community History Program presents events and exhibits, such as our permanent exhibit at the Cape May County Museum in Cape May Court House.

Art Depot is a community-based retail and workshop space dedicated to promoting creativity, sustainability, and arts education through creative reuse. The organization provides gently used art supplies at affordable prices, making materials accessible. Through workshops, classes and community events, Art Depot engages people of all ages, socio-economic backgrounds and creative levels. By connecting sustainability with artistic expression, Art Depot strengthens community connection, empowers individual creativity, provides education, as well as low-cost supplies supporting educators, students and families while reducing waste and supporting environmental responsibility – reusing items destined for landfills.

Our goal is to inspire creativity and support sustainability throughout Cape May County and beyond. We help reduce waste by offering a reliable source of gently used and new art supplies at affordable prices that would otherwise be discarded.

Guided and Self-Guided History Tours
Guided Tour: Hidden in plain sight among Cape May's Victorian beauty are stories of blacks-only beaches and USO, the thriving African-American businesses, the social and religious community, and the fate of the segregated Franklin Street School. This guided tour is 90 minutes of easy walking and begins at 720 Franklin Street.
Self-Guided Tour (cell phone audio) version of the African American Heritage Tour Stop by the Cape May County Library at the Historic Franklin Street School, 720 Franklin Street in Cape May, to pick up the self-guided walking tour pamphlet.
The tour begins in front of the Franklin Street School, look for the audio tour sign stop #1. The tour covers 10 stops.
